PTA Committees and Volunteer Information

To support of our school the PTA has several committees and volunteer opportunities available to you. Volunteer participation is traditional and essential at Fox Mill Elementary. Any extra time you have to volunteer is truly appreciated by the staff, teachers, and students.

Below is a brief description of many of the volunteer activities available with the PTA. You can volunteer at any time by contacting the school or a PTA officer. A formal request for volunteers is normally sent out in early September of each year.

Classroom Support

Room Parent or Co-Room Parent
Times Needed: Determined by the individual teacher.
Description: Work with the teacher and other room parents to assist in the classroom, plan parties, assist in field trips, events, and projects. You may need to contact other parents for assistance. Activities will vary depending on the grade level and teacher.

Special Events Room Parent
Times Needed: Several times throughout the year.
Description: Help get parent volunteers from your child's class to assist with school-wide events. Events include the fall social, staff appreciation lunch, and the fun fair.

Classroom Aid
Times Needed: To be determined by the individual teacher.
Description: Assist the teacher with various classroom activities, depending on grade level and teacher.

At Home Volunteer
Times Needed: To be determined by the individual teacher.
Description: Perfect for the stay at home or working parent. You may be asked to cut out materials for classroom projects, type written student work, bake or cook for various class events.

Computer Lab Aide
Times Needed: To be determined by the individual teacher.
Description: Work with the teacher in assisting students in the computer lab. Needs will vary depending on grade level and the teacher.


School Wide Support

Block Parent
Times Needed: Only in an emergency
Description: Your home will be recognized as a safe place for students to go in case of an emergency. The police will run a background check on all participants. When that is approved, you will get a window display and instructions on what to do in case a child comes to your home. Block Parents are not surrogate parents, but a safe place a child can come to in an emergency.

Bus Duty Aide
Times Needed: Mornings 7:45-8:15 Afternoons 2:40-3:10
Description: Assist the staff with the opening/dismissal of school each day.

Cafeteria Aide
Times Needed: Mondays: 10:20-12:20 Tuesdays-Fridays: 11:00-1:00
Description: Assist students going through the lunch line, getting utensils, opening food containers, etc. You will also assist in monitoring table clean-up and dismissal of students.

Corporate Program Tabulation Aide (Giant & Safeway Receipts)
Times Needed: Anytime September-February
Description: Help our school get computers and other materials by picking up the grocery receipts collected at school, adding them up on your calculator, bundling them and returning them to school.

Friends Make Wise Choices Committee
Times Needed:
Description: Be a part of a committee that helps teach children to make wise choices about drugs, strangers, peer pressure, etc. This program is only for 5th and 6th grades.

Greater Reston Arts Center (GRACE) Art Docent
Times Needed: One day per month (approximately 1-2 hours)
Description: Once a month you will present a lecture, visual aids and an art enrichment project to a class. No experience is and everything is provided for you. A monthly preview and discussion is presented to docents prior to the class presentation. This program is sponsored by the PTA in cooperation with the Greater Reston Arts Center.

Landscaping Committee
Times Needed: Anytime you are available
Description: Help maintain the PTA's atrium and the flower beds outside the school. Can be done anytime, weekdays or weekend mornings. A perfect chance for little ones to play or help.

Newsletter Aide
Times Needed: 2-3 hours every other Monday afternoon
Description: Photocopy approximately 640 copies of the Fox Prints Newsletter to go home with children every other Tuesday. You will be instructed on how to use the copy machine.

Picture Day Aide
Times Needed: One day in the fall and one day in the spring
Description: Assist the teachers on picture day.

Playground Aide
Times Needed: 1-2 hours weekly or biweekly. Mondays: 10:40-12:25; Tuesdays-Fridays: 11:20-1:20
Description: Work with the teachers on playground duty monitoring students.

Publishing/Clerical Aide
Times Needed: A few hours periodically during the school year
Description: Help assemble final copies of students' work. Assist office staff when necessary. Binding and copy machine instructions will be provided.

Reading Aide
Times Needed: 1-2 hours anytime, weekly or bi-weekly
Description: Assist with distributing RIF books, bar-coding language art materials and data entry. You will also assist students with reading and writing.

Reflections Program
Times Needed: October & November
Description: Help put together the Reflections program and reception for students and parents to enjoy. Reflections is the cultural arts program of the National PTA.

Safety
Times Needed: November-March, 7:45-8:15 a.m. (One person Times Needed each cold day.)
Description: Help serve hot chocolate to the safety patrols on cold winter days. Bring your little ones in to help. All supplies are provided.

Science Enrichment
Times Needed: Anytime
Description: Come into school and share your science knowledge with a class to enrich their learning experience. Coordinator will put together a list of parents willing to participate and their areas of interest. The teachers will be able to utilize parents on an as- Times Needed basis.

The PTA normally sponsors a Science Club that meets once a month to hear a presentation on one subject. All Fox Mill students are invited to attend. There is no charge or sign-up requirements.

The PTA also normally arranges for one or two sessions of MAD Science. These sessions are conducted by the MAD Science group and meet for about 10-weeks after school. There is a charge to join these sessions. Information is sent home with students before the sessions begin.

Substitute Clinic Aide
Times Needed: Occasionally throughout the year
Description: Help in school clinic when clinic aide is not in. First Aid training is necessary.

Technology (General Support)
Times Needed: One evening per month and as needed.
Description: Meet monthly to assemble computer equipment, load software, trouble shooting computer and network problems, and assist with other technology projects. Apple computers are the main classroom computer system. The committee assist with maintaining IBM compatibles and the school network.  Assist teachers and students in using KidsPix, Hyper Studio, Claris Works and the Internet. Needs will vary depending on teacher and grade level.

Yearbook
Times Needed: Late May and June
Description: Assist in tabulating yearbook orders.


PTA Fund raisers


Gift Wrap
Times Needed: September, October and November
Description: Help process orders throughout the sale and distribute products when they arrive. This can be done in the evening. This is the biggest income generating fund raiser of the school year.

Book Fair
Times Needed: November 2-16
Description: Assist with set-up, cashier, and take orders for out-of-stock items. The proceeds from this fair will directly benefit our library.

Secret Shop & Craft Fair
Times Needed: November & December
Description:
Craft Fair: Contact and sign up local crafters to participate in fair. Responsible for overseeing set-up/break down on the day of the fair.

Secret Shop: Point of contact for procurement of secret shop inventory. Coordinate volunteers before/during event. Volunteers will help children select gifts. Oversee set-up/break down on the day of the event.

Family Fun Night
Times Needed: January-March, 1999 (For organizational meetings.) In March on the night of the Family Fun Fair.
Description: Help coordinate and run the games and food areas. Lots of fun for the whole family.

Silent Auction
Times Needed: December-March
Description: This fund-raiser is held in conjunction with the Family Fun Night. Volunteers will help solicit donations, set up the auction and the program.

T-Shirt/Sweat Shirt Sale
Times Needed: TBA
Description: Work with committee to come up with a design, find a company to print them, and then organize sales.

School Fund raisers


Chocolate Sale
Times Needed: If scheduled.
Description: You will help process and distribute orders.

Social Events
Description: In the past, these events have included a fall social, a winter social, etc. Volunteers are needed to help set up, serve, and clean up at these events. If you are interested in helping, please sign up and you will be contacted once dates and events become firm.

Hospitality Events
Description: Hospitality events include the annual teachers' luncheon. Volunteers are  needed to help set up, serve, and clean up at these events.

Book Swap
Times Needed: If scheduled.
Description: Children are given the opportunity to select (gently used) books brought in by classmates to swap. Assistance is Times Needed to sort books and help children make selections.
